The most wonderful day An absolutely fantastic day with Lewis and his birds of prey. Lots of hands on time with the birds, and we gained so much information about the birds from Lewis. Whether you have had experience of working with birds of prey or you are just interested in falconry and want to understand more about them then we can't recommend this wonderful experience enough. Where else in the world can you walk up to about 360 metres and watch a white tailed Eagle soaring around you, and then being good enough to come back down when called? Excellent value for money and an experience that we will cherish for years.

Fabulous experience Wow, what a fabulous experience!!! Myself and hubby booked a half day experience. This was fourth time lucky as we had to cancel twice because of COVID and once because of a monster of a storm that swept across the south west. We met Lewis at Ty Newydd, the hotel we were staying at, and he drove us to a farm and later a church on the other side of the village. He flew 5 of his birds one by one and we had plenty of opportunities to handle them and take photos. It was an incredible feeling to see them in a natural setting as opposed to a zoo etc. Lewis is very passionate and knowledgeable about his birds and also the environment and he even took us for a drive onto the Beacons to show us an ancient stone burial site, pointing out and recommending other places to visit that weekend.

Wonderful experience in a beautiful location We had a great time yesterday- Lewis adapted things to my health and also satisfied my love of owls! I bought the experience as a birthday present for a friend and it felt like one of those rare gifts that I got right. It’s a great location in the beautiful Brecon Beacons - a balm to the soul- and we flew owls and a hawk and got to see Lewis working with two stunning birds in training. I learnt all the birds names and would very much like to return and meet more of them! Lewis was passionate, informative and unfailingly helpful. We went back to Ty Newydd hotel for an excellent lunch and I have nothing but the highest of praise for our experience.

Unique and fantastic experience. Very knowledgeable about his birds and truly cares for each of them. Well the experience was a total surprise as it was a birthday gift from my wife. We arrived at the Ty Newydd hotel at around 10am was given a great insight into the business and how passionate Lewis is about birds of prey, the environment and conservation in general. Then we headed out to the countryside to experience amazing animals in their own surrounding. It was a fantastic day and would highly recommend this to anyone. It’s the best way to appreciate how fantastic birds of prey are, without them being caged up. You do a brilliant job and we hope to see you again soon! Thank you!

Fantastic birthday present! This was an experience you just can't get at a tourist /display centre. Lewis believes passionately in the welfare of his birds and displaying them in natural environments where they can enjoy doing what they were born for.The day started at a local hotel with a lovely cup of tea to welcome us and talk about the coming day. Then we were escorted just a couple of minutes up the road into beautiful countryside where we met our first bird Tracey (the Harris Hawk). We all went for a walk through some fields while she flew around us and hunted for prey.We moved to a different spot to let out Ruper the Saker Falcon who needed some big open space to zoom about. He was really on form - roaming around and then racing back - very impressive! In another field we brought out Takora the Eagle Buzzard who, being so big, struggled to find enough wind to really enjoy herself. She certainly attracted the interest of local passing buzzards who still made sure to keep away from this giant beauty! We were then really pleased to meet Lewis' Barn Owl and Tawny Owl who were very friendly (and much smaller)! We live close to Penderyn in Cwmgwrach (the other side of the valley) and we see so many birds and birds of prey. We learned so much from this trip - about our habitat and which birds we might be seeing during our own walks. It turns out we have Sparrow Hawks AND Goshawks in our back garden! For any bird enthusiast, Lewis is a font of knowledge on any bird matters and champions conservation worldwide. We need more people like him in our area - fighting for legislation that makes a real difference to animal welfare and helping to educate people of all ages. Absolutely recommend!

Experience day A day to remember forever. We had a superb day with Lewis and the birds. It was fascinating to learn all about the individual species of birds from owls to the eagles. It was a one on one experience, absolutely magical. It was an overwhelming experience seeing the birds happy flying in their natural habitat. We learnt so much from Lewis who is so passionate and dedicated to the birds and their survival. We all need to learn more about these beautiful birds and what we can do to help them by not destroying their natural environment. We enjoyed it so much we have rebooked. We didn't want the day to end. Lewis is amazing, professional and a true character

A History Of Falconry

Falconry is recognised by UNESCO for it embodies precise aspects of world cultural heritage and as such should be safeguarded for future generations. The term “Falconry” has the following meaning – The taking of wild quarry in its natural surroundings by trained Hawks. The origins of this noble pastime can be traced back as far as BC to what is now central Iran its wely believed that Falconry originated in the far east records exist from China in BC showing Falcons being given as gifts.

The great Khan as documented in the travels of Marco Polo was known to house many hundreds of Hawks Falcons and Eagles and his hunting retinue comprised of over a thousand men. Falconry entered Europe byway of trade along the Silk Road and by the conquest and wars of the various horse tribes that crossed the steppe in search of plunder Genghis Khan and his Mongol hordes favoured the flight of the Golden Eagle the Goths and Gaul’s were known to practice falconry and this is known from the writings of the Romans during the invasion of northern Europe the peoples we now collectively call Vikings were great traders in Hawks and travelled across the Mediterranean to trade Gyr Falcons with the Arab tribes there are no records of the Celts in Britain practising the sport but Saxon and Viking invasions brought Falconry to our Isles .

Falconry flourished both as a prover of meat for the table and a noble pastime for the landed gentry King Alfred the Great hough besieged by Danes and internal strife still found time to compile a manuscript of Falconry. Prior to and the Norman Invasion Harold visited William in Normandy and they went Hawking together and this is shown in the Bayern Tapestry. The Plantagenet Kings all were follows of the sport and Richard Lionheart took Falconers with him during the suprdsupCrusade to the Holy Land.

In probably the most notable book ever written on Falconry was completed by Frederick who was King of Sicily Holy Roman Emperor and King of Jerusalem this book is still used as a point of reference today. Falconry flourished through the Tudor period with harsh penies imposed on anyone who should harm or steal a Hawk or Falcon as they were deemed to be the property of the king with the development of firearms during the reign of the Stuarts and the subsequent civil war Falconry declined and all Birds of Prey suffered as a result of the upsurge is firearm development and game shooting it was not until the early ’s that Falconry once again started claim its place as the most noble of field sports.

Today falconry is practised throughout the world with great weh and investments in captive breeding and conservation of quarry species being championed by the Gulf States the North American Peregrine nearly brought to extinction by the use of pestices has totally recovered due to the efforts of skilled and dedicated Falconers the advances in captive breeding has brought many species within the scope of the ordinary man todays challenges centre mainly on finding wild places to fly our charges. Falconry faces many challenges both from within due to poor practice lack of training and conservationists who lack understanding in our passion but Falconry will survive it is man’s ultimate with his hunting past and the love of wild creatures .
